Adult experiencing a Valen VR grounding session — calm and regulated in a natural setting

4–8 min

to parasympathetic shift

Four mechanisms. One measurable outcome.

01

The parasympathetic trigger

Exposure to natural environments — even rendered ones — activates the ventral vagal pathway, shifting the autonomic nervous system from sympathetic (fight-or-flight) to parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) regulation. The effect appears within 4–8 minutes of immersive exposure.

Bowler et al., 2010; Calogiuri et al., 2018

02

Why virtual works as well as real

A 2019 Stanford study found that immersive VR natural environments produce cortisol reduction and heart-rate variability improvement at rates comparable to actual nature walks. The brain responds to perceived spatial depth and naturalistic movement cues, not photographic accuracy.

Browning et al., 2019

03

Adolescent brains respond faster

Developing prefrontal cortices are more susceptible to environmental regulation cues. Adolescents show more rapid autonomic state shifts from sensory environment changes than adults, making VR grounding especially effective for the K-12 population.

Casey et al., 2016; Tottenham, 2014

04

Grounding vs. escapism: the protocol difference

Valen VR's sessions use structured attentional protocols — breath anchoring, sensory naming, interoceptive cues — not passive entertainment. The VR environment is the delivery mechanism for evidence-based techniques. Students leave more present, not more distracted.

Zeidan et al., 2010; Kabat-Zinn, 2013

Simulating the shift from sympathetic activation to parasympathetic regulation that a Valen session produces. Typically achieved within 8 minutes.

Ten minutes. Measurable shift.

  1. 01

    Virtual nature activates real calm

Studies show exposure to natural environments — even simulated — reduces cortisol and activates the parasympathetic nervous system within minutes.

  2. 02

    Grounding, not escapism

Valen sessions use evidence-based grounding protocols: controlled breathing cues, sensory anchoring, and attentional refocusing. The VR environment is the medium, not the therapy.

  3. 03

    Designed for adolescent neurology

Session length, stimulus intensity, and content are calibrated for developing brains — not adult clinical populations.
